Michael J. Hickey is the Executive Vice President of Atlas and is also the Managing Director of the Albany office. He was the founder of Albany Financial Planners and served as the President of the firm since its formation in early 1983 until he joined Atlas at the beginning of 2014. His thirty-nine years of experience as a business owner began immediately upon his graduation from Siena College in 1976. A member of the Financial Planning Association, he is licensed with the CFP Board of Standards and has been a Certified Financial Planner for over twenty-five years.
Mike previously supervised all of AFP’s investment management services and is now a key member of the Atlas Investment Committee. He provides comprehensive financial advisory services to individuals and small businesses. In addition to offering retirement and estate planning services, he also acts as a consultant to several closely held family businesses. Mike offers “guidance for life’s financial transitions” including assistance for “new wealth” clients who have received sudden wealth from an inheritance, legal settlement, lottery winnings or sale of a substantial asset.
His extensive record of volunteer leadership reflects Mike’s deep commitment to the community. He served for several years on the American Cancer Society’s Advisory Board for the Capital Region. He was an original member who served for a decade on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the School of Business at Siena College. He was on the Board of Directors for the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce for seven years. Over the years, he has chaired several volunteer groups including the Capital Leadership Program, the Environmental Task Force and the Community Orientation Project. After being appointed by New York Governor Mario Cuomo, he completed two terms on the Albany Port District Commission. Several years ago Mike was Chairman of a countywide task force that helped bring progressive reforms to the local political process and became known as the “Hickey Commission.” He has been an active volunteer in the development of youth leadership programs and as a coach in various youth sports. Mike also served as a church trustee for several years. His current volunteer involvement includes support for improved health care, education and economic opportunity in under- developed areas of the world. His is also a strong proponent of improving financial literacy in the U.S. He and his wife Elaine are the proud parents of Brian and Greg, who are both currently college students.
